Methuen Music Hall Show and new single coming - November Newsletter

Hi everyone,

October was a very fun month musically, and November is shaping up to be that way as well. I am very excited about my show at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall with Susan Levine and Grace Morrison. It is on a Sunday afternoon in an absolutely beautiful space, and Susan and Grace are great. I really hope you will join us.

The Sweet Janes (MaryBeth Maes, Lori Wadkins, and me) have a couple of mini-appearances this month, where we'll do a few songs at each. It has been awhile since we performed together, so I am looking forward to those as well. Details are below.

Also, I have been putting the finishing touches on a Christmas single I will release right after Thanksgiving, co-written with me friend Janet Cohen. It is a little bit different than many holiday singles - it talks about the sadness a lot of us feel around this time of year, in addition to the joy.  Here is a snippet; look for the full single in a couple of weeks.

Finally, as the holiday season starts in earnest, I want to remind you all about my lyric greeting cards - both holiday and non-holiday versions are available. If you know of someone who loves stationery, the cards are a great gift, or if you are looking for some cards to add to your own stash, please take a look. The proceeds are donated to Girls Behind the Rock Show.

Until next time, I hope you to see you out at a show, and thank you for all of your support!

:) Kirsten

Fear. At my songwriting group the other night, I was thinking about how you can't really be creative without experiencing some fear. Although I didn't have a song to share the other night for feedback, it struck me anew while listening to the folks who did share songs, how hard it can be to put to creative work out in the world. Will people like it? Will people hate it? Will be just be completely disinterested?

And I was filled with gratitude to be part of a group (and to have other folks in my life) to whom I can bring song drafts, and receive constructive yet caring criticism. It is scary to share a piece of your art with others. Something that you have toiled over and then hope will connect with someone else.

Having a safe place to bring your art first, while you are still working out the kinks, is so important. It makes the fear of sharing the final product recede a bit. And I hope I have provided that safe space for others. It's also important to not let the fear stop you. It is just part of the creative life. As Elizabeth Gilbert writes in Big Magic: “Fear is always triggered by creativity, because creativity asks you to enter into realms of uncertain outcome. This is nothing to be ashamed of. It is, however, something to be dealt with.” That about sums it up to me!

Good Stuff

I have been having fun boppin' around in my car to the new Nikki Lane album, Denim and Diamonds. She has such an interesting sound - a little country, a little throwback to the 50s and 60s, and these songs in particular have a bit of a Joan Jett flavor to me. The title track is one of my faves to sing along to as I am cruising along (warning: some adult language). Check it out!
