Springtime! - April Newsletter

Hello all!

It is officially spring! The season of April showers, May flowers... and allergies. :) Mine haven't been too bad yet, but I've had some watery eyes for sure. But I still love to see all the colors unfold.

It was very nice to be back performing again last month. This month I have a couple things planned - one virtual and one in person. And then as the weather gets warmer I have a nice lineup of shows through the fall, which I will continue to add to. Please check out my website for information about future shows, and the April gigs are listed below. May gigs include a Sweet Janes show as well as an opening set at house concert featuring Sloan Wainwright. I haven't heard Sloan in quite awhile - I am looking forward to being able to do so.

As usual, thank you for your interest and support, and I hope to see you at a show!

:) Kirsten

Spring is a time of new growth. New blades of grass pushing out of the dirt, new buds on plants and trees, and a new "spring" in our step for those of us here in the Northern Hemisphere, as we feel more energized with warmer weather and longer days.

It is also a great time for new creative growth. We can use this newfound energy to tend to the ideas we planted in the more dormant winter months. What will take hold? What will blossom in the sun (pun intended) :) as the springtime season moves forward? To me it feels like everything around is starting anew - I try as much as I can to tap into that feeling, and bring a freshness to my creative practice. We shall see what happens!

Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!

Good Stuff

This is my new favorite book of poetry. I bought it over Christmas at a small bookstore in Vermont, and I have been picking it up and reading from random pages since then. In honor of the spring, and spring tulips, here is a poem that is included, written by Rosemerry Whatola Trommer.

Kindess

Consider the tulip,
how it rises every spring
out of the same soil,
which is, of course,
not at all the same soil,
but new. How long ago
someone’s hands planted a bulb
and gave to this place
a living scrap of beauty.

Consider the six red petals,
the yellow at the center,
the soft green rubber of the stem,
how it bows to the world. How,
the longer we sit beside it,
the more we bow to it.

It is something like kindness,
is it not? The way someone plants
in you a bit of beauty—a kind word,
perhaps, or a touch, the gift
of their time or their smile.
And years later, in the soil that is you,
it emerges again, pushing aside
the dead leaves, insisting on beauty,
a celebration of the one who planted it,
the one who perceives it, and
the fertile place where it has grown.
